Winter News and much, much, much more!

The last winter months have been filled with pugs, family and some finishes. I have had loads of UFO’s (unfinished objects) in my sewing room for months…possibly years-hahahaha!

One of which is a quilt I started before my son Will’s 20th birthday. Will’s birthday is in May and last year 2021 I gave him a pieced quilt top for his birthday. It surprised him to receive such a gift, I believe partly because in his mind I only made quilts for my kids that left home for college. SO NOT TRUE!

Anyway, to receive a pieced quilt top, isn’t too much fun because it isn’t a finished gift. It is a gift in the making if you will. I bought a kit for this one. The fabrics and quilt pattern design (Comet) are all Ruby Star Society and the most talented designer Rashida Coleman-Hale. I found it on Etsy from Fabricmart. A super fun project with a lot of cutting involved AND a lot of sewing.

All these fabrics on their own are beautiful, but when pieced together, they collide into a striking explosion of yellow, blues and metallic gold, yep metallic.

Upside down or right side up, I’m not sure which way this quilt goes, you be the judge. That’s me holding the quilt on a step stool. It’s a pretty large quilt, at about 70” x 90” and I wasn’t able to stretch my arms as wide as it was. The wind was blowing also, so please pardon the wonky pictures.

To quilt this baby I did a free motion quilting stitch of my own creation. Just a curvy never ending stitch, which isn’t really never ending since the bobbin needed to be changed from time to time and my thread would often break. UGH!

FMQ on the surface sounds so tranquil and relaxing, like a trip to the spa in Carmel, la la la you sing as you slowing move your stitching in a circular motion. For me it certainly is not. I liken it to a torture chamber, that leaves you with stiff shoulders and a sore neck. I know if I practiced more, I would relax while quilting and I would also get better at making beautiful circles and lovely floral shapes. Sigh, maybe someday!

There were other finishes as well over the winter months. I sewed an ipad cover for my new ipad. I crocheted a wrap. What have you been up to on your end of the world?

Until next time,

Tracey
